This project transforms light into physical artifacts.  I developed a custom software systems to capture photographs of sunlight moving through the built environment and transform them into three-dimensional glass sculptures.  This work engages with the architectural design and history at the locations I photograph.

Motivation

This work is motivated by the importance of light as a vital element in our experience of the built environment and a potent medium for artistic practice.

Observation

This project started by mindfully observing a building throughout the day.  I walk around it and experience its spatial qualities, while searching for moments with light that I find interesting. Often times these locations and moments in time are the result of unique decisions made the building's architect.

Implementation

I record timelapse footage of the light and use code and computer vision to trace it's shape over time.  I spatialize those shapes into three-dimensional form, that represents the movement of light over time.
