The lunar Navigation and Observation Mobile Architecture Design (lunarNOMAD) is a modular inflatable mobile science laboratory. lunarNOMAD can support up to four crew for a short-term, 3-month stay on the lunar surface. Its mobile functionality allows crew to traverse the equatorial regions of the Moon to collect science data at new and historical sites such as the Apollo mission sites. The main cabin of the lunarNOMAD is suitable for living and can expand to twice its volume by inflating when parked. lunarNOMAD places accessibility and universality at its core: emphasizing the idea of space for the benefit of all and collaborative scientific exploration to push against narratives of colonization, extraction, and weaponization. The internal framing is both a structural support and allows for the attachment and rearrangement of shelves or furniture. It is a design that is customisable to the crew’s spatial and accessibility needs, thereby formulating a mission that expands our understanding of who can go to the moon.
