Ruby Liu

Ruby Liu (they/them) has a broad interest in seeing how we can find the intersection of humanity and technology to bring the best of both together in an integrated future - how both can benefit from and improve each other. 

Currently, they are focused on how conversational AI can improve mental health and, in turn, physical health. They are investigating how AI can be used to address the ever-growing epidemic of loneliness, especially in older adults. 

They are a Ph.D. student in the Medical Engineering and Medical Physics (MEMP) program at Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology (HST). Previously, they have completed a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, with minors in computer science, robotics, and computer-integrated surgery. They have conducted research to build an augmented reality system for ventriculostomy, a neurosurgical procedure, as well as a sonification system for subretinal injection, in which needle depth is communicated to the surgeon using sound. 

Outside of academics, they have numerous hobbies. They create digital art, write web novels, design characters, model 3D sculptures, sometimes animate, and sometimes compose music.
